WHAT IS SHADOWLIGHT?
All throughout human history, everywhere around the world, the belief in "other worlds" has existed side by side with the belief in magic and the supernatural. In fact, these two are one and the same. The Shadowlight is the world in-between that binds all other mythical Otherworlds together. It is intertwined with ours, yet unless you possess the gift of magic, it cannot be perceived. And magic and life flow from it.

THE PLOT SO FAR
The year is 2012. After the explosive and public 20th century, things have settled down. The old covens remain safely secret, the Guardians still keep watch. But the young defy the Laws of Secrecy, and everywhere there's rumors of dark magic. On All Hallows Eve the year shall "die" to lie entombed till it's once again reborn. Winter Solstice is the day, Fate and Time be squared and met.

Biography: Adrien Christophe Dounay, born on one of the last days of April in 1992, never had what you could call a difficult life. Indeed, both his father, a businessman, and his mother, a heiress, were rather rich, though by different means, of course. His childhood was blessed with innocence and fun, like any child’s life ought to be.

His family had trouble accepting him at first, of course. The McDonells were an old, powerful, rich family from the north of Ireland, in County Meath, to be exact, although they owned a summer-time cottage in the small, beach-front part of County Meath. So, to have their daughter, Alice, marry a French-man was such a tragedy that his grandfather still got red in the face when he saw Christophe Dounay (Adrien’s father).

So, Adrien was half-loved, half-hated by his Irish family, though the French family seemed to love him just fine, with no qualms about him being ‘half-Irish’. Young Mister Dounay was born, as his father, in the small town of Hondeghem, in the North of France. A quaint, little town with a little over a thousand habitants, Hondeghem was never the center of the action. But they didn’t live there for long, of course. His mother soon decided she wanted to go back to England when he was one year old, and they moved to the old summer-time house, now a year-round large cottage for the Dounay family.
This place, Laytown, was… strange. Adrien could feel it, when he started growing up. There was something around Laytown, something not quite… normal. It wasn’t evil, per se, but it was just… strange, not common. And that’s what made him weary. But, three years after they moved to Laytown, in the year of 1996, his sister, Rosalie Alice Dounay was born. Young Adrien was, of course, delighted at the arrival of a new playmate.

Both siblings grew up together for some years, until it was time for Adrien to continue an old tradition for the Dounay family, going to a boarding school. Rockwell College. The twelve-year-old boy was a bit terrified of leaving all he knew behind, but he hoped, above all, that he would be a good student. Ever since a young age, he had loved reading. He devoured book after book of various topics, and had an almost photographic detail, remembering names, places, and even dates mentioned in such books.

But Rockwell wasn’t just going to be a place of learning and of preparation of what would come later in life, oh no. Rockwell would teach the young Dounay many more things. Upon arrival, he met he who would be his best friend for, apparently, the rest of his life, Bran Collins, an Irish boy from Dublin. They became friends almost instantly, but never got paired as roommates. Why? We’ll never know, though Adrien believes the Professors knew his calm behavior would often disappear when he was with Bran.

His first year at Rockwell was nothing overly interesting, just getting used to everything and making friends. But in his second year, something strange started happening to him. He would have weird dreams about some sort of… dark place… he couldn’t explain them. He just knew he know those places, he recognized some of them, like some ruins in Mexico, but they were… whole, but in a sort of shadow, enveloping them. He couldn’t really describe and never bothered to tell anyone what these strange dreams. He assumed that the porridge had been bad, or that his head was too lazy to create new dreams.
But that was not everything. Somehow, inexplicably, he began seeing what would happen in the very near future. Him being alone in his dorm (his roommate moved a week after that vision), Bran having an accident and things like that. But, unlike his dreams, these visions began happening when he was awake, which only worked to freak him out even more.
The thirteen year old did not dare tell anybody what was happening, for Rockwell was a very religious school and he feared the repercussions of what could happen. But as soon as the boarders were allowed to return home for the summer, the now 14 year old began searching for anything that could clue him into what was happening. But nothing much could be found on both of his families’ library, even though he went and stayed with the McDonells in their small castle for two weeks.

Nothing. Until one fateful day he was alone, having gone to nearby Tara Hill to admire the Lia Fáil. Footsteps behind him warned him that this unusually quiet day at Tara Hill was about to end (it was, of course, always swarmed with tourists, specially in summer). But the person that interrupted his time of quiet contemplation turned out to be a savior. Erynn Aldridge.

Mrs. Aldridge was a witch. A true one, not those that Adrien had found that read Tarot cards and did stuff like that. No, Erynn Aldridge, a middle-aged woman, was a true witch, with one power of Adrien’s (Clairvoyance), though her other powers were quite different. But she was able to begin teaching Adrien about the ways of Magic, and introduced him to the Wiccan way of magic, which Adrien continued to practice as much as he could at his school, even though it was hard, doing such things without being caught by the overly-religious teachers.
The next two years passed slowly, with Adrien slowly beginning to understand more about this Shadowlight, and about how he could see it. His powers of precognition grew some more, until he could see about a month into the future. But his sixteenth year of life, his fourth at Rockwell, was marked by yet another new roommate. Cyril Michael Nimeras. An English boy a year above him, who he had seen around the school.

But they had never interacted much, until they became roommates. Cyril Nimeras was, of course, helpful in the department of homework, as he had taken almost all of Adrien’s same courses (except for Spanish). But one night, everything changed. As he slept, now normal dreams in his head, after learning to control his clairvoyance a bit, Adrien could feel someone’s lips on his. He had kissed girls before, of course. In a Boarding, Co-ed school, who could resist temptation?

But upon opening his eyes, he found Cyril on top of him, pretty much naked, except for his boxers. Adrien was in a similar state, only with the addition of an under-shirt. It being late summer, it wasn’t a wonder both boys were dressed like this for sleeping. But Adrien was so surprised by the actions of his roommate, the older boy was immediately pushed off the bed, while the Frenchman started asking in French what the hell was happening. Cyril answered in French, and returned to the kissing, but with his hand now on the younger boy’s little friend.

Desire, passion, intrigue. Those and more were the feelings coursing like a hurricane through the Frenchman’s mind, as he and Cyril began their relationship with the ultimate act of love. Or well, almost ultimate, since they both decided to wait a little while, for their relationship to grow, before they finished the action completely.

Dating another boy in such a strict school was horribly hard, but they had their shared bedroom, of course. And that sixteenth year of Adrien Christophe Dounay’s life passed, and now, it was the seventeenth year. A year that also brought changes to his life, for Mrs. Aldridge had finally decided to perform the ritual for the boy to become an Adept.

The woman’s love for magic and for the Arthurian legends made the boy’s ritual very interesting, with Adrien half-losing consciousness, being swept in the mysticism of the ritual. At the end, he pledged to his Adept studies. And he discovered his third power. Photokinesis. Which was, obviously, the most useful thing ever. To distort the light around himself and Cyril so they could kiss in the middle of the dinning hall…
Yes, totally awesome. But time must pass, and way too soon, Cyril graduated and went to school elsewhere, in London, Adrien believed. But he wasn’t sure, and he lost contact with his boyfriend. And what about Bran? Bran, it turned out, was still alive after the many accidents he managed to have, for he was an accident-machine, due to his love of the dangerous sports and the like in life.

But the two friends continued as such during all those years. And they still are friends, even though Bran now knows about Adrien’s powers… The two departed for University, ready to face the challenges of life.

Personality: Each one’s personality is different, of course. We may share some traits, some quirks but we are never completely identical. But what makes Adrien Dounay himself, in terms of personality? His shyness is one answer. Shy, the boy can be, when he first meets someone. He looks at his feet and avoids starting conversation unless he is directly asked something. But when he gains confidence, he begins talking non-stop, and a new dimension of him is opened: he seems to feel the imperious need of being always, or almost always, right.

He doesn’t like criticism, at all, and most of the times, will get mad at any kind of criticism. But as he has grown older, he has learned to accept just a tiny bit of criticism, though most of it still makes him angry. And when he gets angry, you’d better take cover, for this Taurus boy, just like his sign, will act on impulse, and he will, 90% of the time, regret whatever he said or did during his periods of anger.

The Irish boy prefers a quiet sort of life, with not much action in it. Discovering magic was quite a shock for him, more than he really wanted or needed in the peaceful life he leads. His greatest desire is probably to see a better world, a world without discrimination, a world of peace and the like. But he knows he might not be able to do anything to help the world, and that saddens him. It is not unusual for his periods of sadness to turn into a very mild depression that lasts for about a week.

Due to his shyness and quiet nature, he has problems to make friends. He prefers them to talk to him than the opposite. But once he has managed to make some friends, he is revealed as talkative, and a deep thinker. Also, as a lover of fun, contrary to what his otherwise quiet lifestyle may indicate. He has never loved loud parties, no, but a night hanging out with his friends at a pub or watching movies will never be avoided.
Anyway, once the Dounay boy has made some friends, he will be forever loyal to them… unless they, of course, do something to break his trust. It is then that he can show his dark side. Due to not talking, and mostly listening, he knows many things to hurt people, and will not hesitate to hurt people that have hurt him. He likes having his revenge…

But once he is hurt, a deep, underlying fear, will remain on his heart… even if he manages to come to terms with those that hurt him, he will always have that fear of being hurt again, and may show himself as being cold, a little bit distant, but perhaps not enough.

His quiet nature also has to do with a kind of phobia of being ridiculed, or of doing something stupid. That’s why he prefers to keep quiet. But if he has just the smallest amount of trust, he will talk, and without thinking, bringing many unintended consequences upon himself and others. But, hey, everyone has to have a bit of a dark side, right?

Sample
It was futile. Trying to reason with the McNutty—err, McDowell side of the family about him being ‘half French’ was like convincing dogs to stop peeing. In other words, totally useless. While his grandmother and his aunt adored him, for some odd reason, they still maintained that the French blood running through his veins was tainted and he was not worthy of receiving a part of the McDowell riches, as each grandson would receive upon the death of their grandfather.

But Adrien Christophe Dounay didn’t care in the least about his grandfather’s richness and the family’s castle in central Ireland. His father, Christophe Dounay, had enough money – all that Adrien needed to complete University. And that’s what mattered.

Besides, he had another treasure none of his cousins could ever attain – he had magic powers. Oh, yeah. He had discovered that fact when he was about thirteen – seven years ago now. His magic powers, were seemingly boring. Precognition and some sort of clairvoyance… sometimes, he could see strange things, happening somewhere else, but he couldn’t really understand what was happening.

It had been lucky, really, that he had found Mrs. Aldridge, an old widow who also was a witch herself, albeit with different powers. For the last seven years, Adrien had gone to her house every day of his winter, spring and summer holidays, for he had always been sent to a boarding school, ever since he was young, and now, when he was in University, he was living in Dublin.
